In Norfolk’s competitive football landscape, Personal Best Soccer is making a name for itself by focusing on more than just results. Led by Academy Manager Luke Milligan, the programme is dedicated to helping young players grow not only as athletes, but as individuals.

A Programme Built on Development

Personal Best Soccer is a football development programme designed to bring out the best in every player. Through structured training sessions, competitive matches, and a strong focus on education, players are given the tools to improve their technical ability, fitness, and understanding of the game.

What sets the programme apart is its commitment to personal growth. Alongside football development, players are encouraged to build confidence, discipline, and a strong mindset—key qualities that extend far beyond the pitch.

From Player to Coach

Luke’s journey into coaching began during his time on the DESA College programme, where he discovered a passion for developing others while continuing to play. With guidance and encouragement from mentors Lee Perry and Tom Parke, he took the first steps into coaching and hasn’t looked back since.

“That support gave me the confidence to take coaching seriously and develop my skills,” Luke explains.

What Makes Personal Best Soccer Unique

At its core, the programme is centred around the individual. Rather than focusing solely on team performance, Personal Best Soccer works with each player to set personal targets and track their progress.

This approach creates a positive and supportive environment where players are motivated to push themselves, improve consistently, and strive to achieve their own personal best.

Celebrating Success

Recent achievements underline the programme’s impact. The current Under-16s squad enjoyed an outstanding season, winning the Junior Premier League Midlands League before going on to secure the playoff title. They then finished third in the national playoffs—a remarkable reflection of their talent and dedication.

The U13s have also celebrated success, winning both the Junior Premier League Midlands Division and the Fleetwood Town Cup, adding to a growing list of academy achievements.

The team also competed in the MIC International Tournament, gaining valuable experience against top-level international opposition—an unforgettable step in their development.

Overcoming Challenges

Transitioning from player to coach came with its challenges, particularly managing players close in age and earning their respect. Luke has navigated this by staying consistent, continuing to learn from experienced coaches, and building strong relationships within the squad.

“Over time, that’s helped me grow in confidence and develop my own coaching style,” he says.

Advice for Aspiring Coaches

For those looking to follow a similar path, Luke’s advice is clear: be patient, stay open to learning, and take every opportunity to gain experience.

“Don’t be afraid to make mistakes—that’s how you improve. And always focus on creating a positive environment for your players.”

Looking Ahead

The future is bright for Personal Best Soccer. With trials for the 2026/2027 season on the horizon, the programme is preparing to welcome new talent and continue raising standards across all age groups.

It’s an exciting time as they look to build the next generation of players and push even further.
